What Does Pünkösd Mean In English?
Pünkösd in English is Pentecost, which is celebrated on the fiftieth day after Easter Sunday. As far as the ethimology, both words pünkösd (in Hungarian) and Pentecost (in English) come from the Greek Πεντηκοστή (Pentēkostē) meaning „fiftieth”.
Pentecost (pünkösd in English) commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus. It represents the birthday of the Church for most Christians too.
Pentecost is also called Whitsun in English. Whitsunday and Whitmonday are public holidays in several countries, like France, Germany, Greece and Hungary too.
